New Kia PV7 Electric Van Revealed: Is This the Next Major Step for Electric Commercial Vehicles?

Kia has unveiled the new PV7, a larger all-electric commercial vehicle designed to serve fleets, logistics operators, passenger-transport providers and businesses requiring specialist vehicle conversions.

Scheduled to launch in Europe during the second half of 2027, the PV7 will become the second model in Kia’s dedicated Platform Beyond Vehicle—or PBV—range, following the smaller PV5.

On paper, its preliminary specifications are impressive. Kia is targeting more than 460km—approximately 286 miles—of WLTP range, rapid 800-volt charging and up to 1,200kg of payload capacity. Depending on the configuration, operators will also be offered as much as 8.0m³ of load space.

However, the most significant aspect of the PV7 may not be its headline range.

Kia appears to be developing the vehicle as part of a wider business ecosystem incorporating conversions, fleet-management software, predictive diagnostics and services intended to improve uptime. This suggests the manufacturer understands that businesses need more than an electric powertrain—they need a vehicle that can perform a specific job reliably and cost-effectively.

What is the Kia PV7?

The PV7 is a dedicated electric commercial and passenger vehicle built on Kia’s E-GMP.S architecture.

Unlike an electric van adapted from a model originally developed around a combustion engine, the PV7 has been designed as an EV from the outset. Its architecture provides a flat floor and allows Kia to produce different body styles and conversions from a common vehicle structure.

The initial range is expected to include:

  • PV7 Cargo
  • PV7 Passenger
  • Compact and Long body lengths
  • High Roof versions
  • Chassis Cab models
  • Specialist converted vehicles

Kia plans to expand the range to as many as 23 variants following its initial launch. An even larger PV9 model is planned to follow in 2029.

This breadth of derivatives could prove important. Commercial vehicle users rarely have identical requirements, and a successful van range must support everything from parcel deliveries and mobile workshops to refrigerated transport, passenger shuttles and accessible vehicles.

Kia PV7 battery, power and targeted range

Kia has announced two nickel cobalt manganese battery options for the PV7:

  • 71.5kWh
  • 96.2kWh

Depending on the market and configuration, the electric motor will produce up to 200kW—approximately 268hp—and 420Nm of torque.

Front-wheel drive will be standard at launch, while Kia says an all-wheel-drive derivative will be introduced later.

The Long Range Cargo model is targeting more than 460km of range under the WLTP testing procedure. That equates to approximately 286 miles.

It is an encouraging figure for a vehicle of this size, although businesses should treat it as a preliminary target for now. Kia states that the figure is based on internal testing and remains subject to final WLTP homologation.

The real-world range will also depend on several operational factors, including:

  • Payload
  • Vehicle conversion
  • Driving speed
  • Route profile
  • Outside temperature
  • Heating and air-conditioning use
  • Driving style
  • Wheel and tyre specification

For fleets, the more useful calculation will therefore be whether the PV7 can complete a specific working route with its normal load while retaining a practical charging reserve.

A 286-mile official range does not necessarily mean that every operator will achieve 286 miles in service. Equally, many vehicles do not need to travel anything close to that distance during a typical working day.

Route data and actual vehicle use should remain at the centre of any decision to move from diesel to electric vans.

800-volt charging could help reduce downtime

The PV7’s 800-volt electrical architecture is one of its most notable features.

Kia says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in the mid-20-minute range when connected to a suitable 350kW DC rapid charger.

That could make the vehicle more practical for operations involving high daily mileages or multiple shifts. However, achieving the quoted charging performance will depend on battery temperature, charger capability, charging conditions and the rate the vehicle can maintain throughout the session.

Access to a 350kW charger may not be necessary—or economical—for every fleet. Many businesses are likely to charge their vehicles overnight at a depot using lower-powered AC equipment.

Kia has also developed a dual-port arrangement for the PV7. This includes a front AC/DC charging connection and an optional rear-side AC port, giving operators greater flexibility when parking at depots or public charging locations.

It is a relatively simple idea, but it addresses a genuine operational issue. The location of a vehicle’s charging port can affect how easily multiple vans can be parked and connected without blocking access or stretching cables across working areas.

How much can the Kia PV7 Cargo carry?

The PV7 Cargo is being developed for logistics, deliveries, fleet operations and small and medium-sized businesses.

According to Kia’s preliminary figures, the Cargo Long model will provide:

  • Up to 6.1m³ of load volume
  • A maximum payload of 1,165kg
  • Space for as many as three Euro pallets
  • A loading height of approximately 550mm
  • Two- or three-seat configurations

The High Roof model is expected to increase maximum load volume to 8.0m³.

Kia quotes a payload of up to 1,200kg for the Compact Cargo variant. It is important to distinguish this from the 1,165kg figure announced for the Long model, as payload will vary according to body style, battery, equipment and final specification.

A dedicated heavy-load driving mode will adapt the vehicle’s performance to different payload conditions. This is intended to help the PV7 remain stable and predictable when operating with a substantial load.

Operators will also be able to choose from different cargo-area materials and rear-door configurations, including twin side-hinged doors or a conventional lift-up tailgate.

Other planned practical features include:

  • A load-through bulkhead on selected three-seat models
  • Independently controlled cargo-door locking
  • Remote cargo-door status monitoring
  • A power sliding door that can close automatically when the driver walks away
  • Replaceable bumper corners, wheel-arch sections and protective cladding

These details may sound less exciting than the power or range figures, but they could have a greater influence on everyday productivity and repair costs.

A commercial vehicle needs to be more than an electric van

The development of the PV7 reflects a wider change in the electric commercial vehicle market.

Early electric vans were often assessed primarily on battery capacity and official range. As the market develops, the conversation is becoming more sophisticated.

Fleet operators need to consider:

  • Usable payload after accounting for the battery and conversion
  • Real-world range when the vehicle is fully loaded
  • Charging infrastructure and available grid capacity
  • Vehicle uptime and maintenance support
  • Conversion availability
  • Driver acceptance
  • Insurance
  • Residual value
  • Whole-life operating cost

Kia’s approach appears to recognise these wider requirements.

The manufacturer plans to support the PV7 through its Business Solutions Portal, providing tools for fleet management, charging, maintenance and daily operations. Connected-vehicle data and fleet-management interfaces are intended to give operators greater visibility over their vehicles.

Kia has also announced uptime services incorporating real-time monitoring, predictive diagnostics and proactive maintenance management.

The value of these services will ultimately depend on how effectively they work in real fleet environments. Nevertheless, the strategy is important because avoiding unplanned downtime can be more valuable to an operator than achieving a marginal improvement in official range.

Conversions could be one of the PV7’s strongest advantages

Kia intends to offer a Chassis Cab alongside a wide selection of converted PV7 models.

The platform uses a standardised connector intended to allow conversion equipment to be operated through the vehicle. This could potentially create a more integrated relationship between the base vehicle and equipment such as refrigeration systems, access equipment or other specialist installations.

Production will be supported by Kia’s dedicated PBV plant and conversion centre, alongside regional conversion partners.

  • Refrigerated and temperature-controlled vehicles
  • Mobile workshops
  • Service and maintenance vans
  • Accessible passenger vehicles

The fact that these applications are being considered as part of the original vehicle programme is nevertheless encouraging.

PV7 Passenger will offer seating for up to nine people

Alongside the commercial van, Kia will offer a PV7 Passenger model for crew transport, shuttle services, rental operators, tourism and family use.

Global versions will accommodate up to nine occupants, with several seating arrangements planned. A seven-seat version will use removable seats mounted on long rails, allowing the interior to be rearranged for different passenger and luggage requirements.

Depending on the market and specification, equipment is expected to include rear climate control, power-operated sliding doors, high-output USB-C connections and flexible storage.

The passenger model could be particularly relevant to airport-transfer businesses, hotels, community transport providers and organisations looking to replace diesel minibuses on predictable routes.

Vehicle-to-Load adds another practical function

The PV7 will offer Vehicle-to-Load technology, commonly known as V2L.

This allows energy stored in the traction battery to power external tools, equipment and electrical devices through interior or exterior outlets.

For some operators, this could turn the vehicle into a mobile power source for:

  • Power tools
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Laptops and mobile devices
  • Site lighting
  • Refrigeration or catering equipment
  • Other business machinery

Kia has announced that the PV7 will launch in Korea and Europe during the second half of 2027.

Our view: why established van manufacturers should take notice

The Kia PV7 enters a market where trust, dealer support and operational experience matter enormously.

Established commercial vehicle manufacturers already have strong customer relationships, service networks and extensive conversion programmes. Kia will need to demonstrate that it can provide comparable support to businesses for which a van being off the road means lost income.

However, Kia is not approaching the sector cautiously.

The combination of a dedicated EV platform, targeted 286-mile range, 800-volt charging, meaningful payload capacity and an extensive conversion strategy could make the PV7 a serious alternative for many operators.

Perhaps its most important contribution is that it moves the electric van conversation forward.

Instead of asking only whether an electric van can cover enough miles, the PV7 encourages businesses to consider how the vehicle, charging, software, conversions and maintenance support can work together.

That is the direction the market needs to take.

Electric vans will not suit every business or route. But as products become more capable and manufacturers focus more closely on operational requirements, the number of suitable use cases should continue to grow.

If Kia delivers on its preliminary figures—and builds the necessary service and conversion support around the vehicle—the PV7 could become one of the most significant new entrants to the European commercial vehicle market.
