Jaguar Type 01 unveiled: can a bold new future honour an extraordinary past?

Jaguar’s transformation has reached a defining moment. The new Type 01 has been unveiled in New York, introducing an all-electric, four-door luxury grand tourer with prices starting from £130,000. Orders are scheduled to open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected in the second half of the year.

For a brand with such a strong identity, this launch raises a question that specifications alone cannot answer: will the new generation feel like a Jaguar?

At MPH Vehicle Solutions, we believe the answer will depend on how successfully the Type 01 connects its dramatic new direction with the qualities that made people care about the badge in the first place.

Why Jaguar’s heritage matters

For many enthusiasts, Jaguar is more than a manufacturer. It represents a particular idea of British motoring: expressive design, performance and an ability to make a journey feel special.

The XK120 arrived in 1948, followed by the E-Type in 1961 and the XJ in 1968. These cars helped establish different sides of Jaguar’s identity, from the appeal of an open sports car to the comfort and character of a luxury saloon.

That history creates a powerful emotional connection. Owners may associate the brand with a car they once drove, a family memory or a model they admired long before they could afford it.

It also creates expectations. When a manufacturer changes its appearance, technology and market position together, longstanding supporters can understandably wonder whether there will still be a place for them.

Why the transformation may divide Jaguar fans

Some enthusiasts will welcome a Jaguar that takes risks. Others may feel that the new direction moves too far from the cars they know and love.

Neither response should be dismissed.

For drivers who associate Jaguar with an engine’s sound, familiar styling or traditional cabin details, an electric GT introduces a different experience. Buyers drawn to contemporary design and electric performance may see the same changes as reasons to take a fresh interest in the brand.

Our view is that Jaguar’s challenge is to create a recognisable emotional connection across those differences.

Heritage can give a new car credibility, but it also raises the standard against which it will be judged. The Type 01 will need to offer qualities that customers can experience behind the wheel, beyond the name on the bodywork.

What Jaguar has announced about the Type 01

The Type 01 uses Jaguar’s dedicated electric architecture. JLR has announced the following headline figures:

Specification

Announced figure

Power

Up to 1,030PS

Torque

Up to 1,365Nm

Acceleration

0–62mph in 3.2 seconds

Usable battery capacity

118kWh

Electrical architecture

850 volts

Estimated range

Up to 400 miles on the EPA test cycle

Rapid charging

Up to 200 miles of range added in as little as 13 minutes using 350kW DC charging

Starting price

£130,000

JLR says production will begin in 2027 at Solihull, with battery packs and electric drive units made in Wolverhampton and pressed body panels manufactured in Halewood.

These are manufacturer-announced figures. The range estimate is subject to homologation, and the EPA figure should not be presented as a UK WLTP result. Actual range and charging performance will depend on the vehicle, battery condition, weather, driving and charging facilities.

A grand tourer needs more than acceleration

The performance figures make an immediate impression. However, our view is that a luxury grand tourer earns its reputation over longer journeys.

For prospective buyers, the important questions will include:

  • Does it remain comfortable after several hours on the road?
  • How quiet and composed is it at motorway speeds?
  • How much range is available in everyday British conditions?
  • How reliably can it deliver rapid charging during a journey?
  • Are its controls and technology straightforward to use?

These qualities will shape whether customers enjoy living with the car after the excitement of the unveiling has passed.

A memorable design can start a conversation. A satisfying ownership experience can build loyalty.

What buyers should watch before making a decision

For private customers and businesses considering a luxury EV, the purchase price is only one part of the assessment.

Insurance, maintenance, tyre costs, charging access and expected depreciation all deserve attention. Where finance or leasing is being considered, the available terms and total cost over the agreement will also influence the decision.

For the Type 01 specifically, we would want to assess independent road tests, UK range information, final specifications and funding options as these become available. We would also look closely at aftersales support and the practicalities of using the car for the customer’s usual journeys.

It is too early to make confident claims about its residual values or future lease payments. Those questions need evidence rather than assumptions based on launch-day attention.

Can the Type 01 build a bridge to Jaguar’s past?

Jaguar’s heritage gives the Type 01 a demanding audience, but also a valuable opportunity.

The brand does not need every enthusiast to agree with every design decision. It does need to give people compelling reasons to understand its direction and buyers compelling reasons to choose the car.

For us, the most interesting test will be whether the Type 01 delivers a sense of occasion alongside comfort, capability and character. Those are qualities that could help connect a very different vehicle with familiar expectations of Jaguar.

The unveiling has shown the ambition. Independent reviews and customer experience will reveal how convincingly that ambition translates to the road.
