Changes to Pick Up trucks from 6th April 2025

HMRC Pick-Up Tax Classification Changes from 6th April 2025

From 6th April 2025, HMRC will be updating the rules around how pick-up vehicles are classified for tax purposes. These changes could significantly impact businesses and individuals using pick-ups as company vehicles. Below, we’ve outlined the details of these changes, what they mean for you, and some general information about pick-up vehicles to help you make informed decisions.

Understanding the Changes

Currently, pick-up vehicles that meet the criteria of a commercial vehicle enjoy certain tax advantages, including lower Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax rates for employees using them as company cars. However, from 6th April 2025, HMRC will implement stricter classification criteria, which may result in some pick-ups being reclassified as passenger vehicles.

New Classification Criteria:

  1. Payload Capacity:

    • To qualify as a commercial vehicle, a pick-up must have a payload capacity (the weight it can carry, excluding passengers) of 1 tonne or more.

    • Vehicles with additional features (e.g., hard tops or canopies) may have their payload capacity adjusted for classification purposes.

  2. Seating and Design:

    • The number of seats and the overall design of the vehicle will also play a role in determining its classification.

  3. Existing pick ups and ordering now
    • If you already own or purchase a new Pick up before 6th April 2025, the current capital allowances treatment will continue to apply.

Employers who have purchased, leased, or ordered a pick-up before 6 April 2025 will also be eligible for transitional benefit-in-kind (BIK) arrangements, allowing them to use the previous BIK treatment until the vehicle is disposed of, the lease expires, or until 5 April 2029, whichever comes first.

How Different Pick-Up Types Are Affected:

  • Single-Cab Pick-Ups:

    • Typically used more exclusively for work purposes and with fewer seating options.

    • As long as the payload exceeds 1 tonne, these are likely to remain classified as commercial vehicles.

    • Less likely to be reclassified under the new rules, but businesses should confirm compliance for specific models.

  • Extended-Cab Pick-Ups:

    • These have a smaller rear seating area compared to double-cab models, with occasional-use rear seats.

    • The payload capacity may be reduced slightly due to additional seating but often remains compliant with the 1-tonne threshold.

    • Businesses should review specific models to ensure compliance.

  • Double-Cab Pick-Ups:

    • These are the primary focus of the new rules due to their combination of passenger and cargo functionality.

    • To qualify as a commercial vehicle, the payload (excluding passengers) must remain 1 tonne or more. Features like hardtops, canopies, or other modifications could reduce the payload below this threshold.

    • More at risk of reclassification if payload capacity is compromised by added accessories or design changes.

Implications of Reclassification:

  • Higher Tax Costs: If a pick-up is reclassified as a passenger vehicle, the driver may face higher BIK tax rates, similar to those applied to standard cars.

  • Fleet Compliance: Businesses may need to review their fleets to ensure compliance with the new rules.

Why Act Now?

If you purchase and take delivery of a pick-up before 6th April 2025, it will continue to be classified under the current commercial vehicle rules, regardless of the new criteria. This presents an opportunity to avoid potential tax increases and ensure your pick-up remains cost-effective for your business.

General Information About Pick-Up Vehicles

Pick-ups are versatile vehicles that combine practicality and functionality, making them an excellent choice for businesses and individuals alike. Below are some of the key benefits of owning or leasing a pick-up:

1. Practicality:

  • Pick-ups offer spacious load beds, ideal for transporting tools, equipment, or other heavy items.

  • Many models include advanced features like all-wheel drive, making them suitable for a variety of terrains and weather conditions.

2. Tax Benefits (Under Current Rules):

  • Classified as commercial vehicles, pick-ups typically attract lower BIK tax rates compared to passenger vehicles.

  • VAT can be reclaimed on the purchase or lease of a pick-up used exclusively for business purposes. Unlike a car you can claim 100% of the VAT back.

3. Modern Comforts:

  • Despite their rugged design, modern pick-ups come equipped with advanced technology, comfortable interiors, and safety features, making them suitable for both work and personal use.

4. Versatility:

  • With options ranging from single-cab to double-cab configurations, pick-ups can be tailored to suit a variety of business and personal needs.
