Some of the staff at MPH had the pleasure of spending time with the guys at Land Rover for their experience day. We had chance to see how the new Land Rover Discovery preformed with the rugged outdoors.
We were driving the Land Rover Discover 3.0Tdi HSE and by the looks of it with all the extras added onto it. Some nice features were the automation lowering and raising of the middle and rear seats. (don’t forget the Discovery is a 7-seater) If you have a tow bar fitted you can deploy this from the comfort of the driver’s seat by pressing a button on the screen. As you would expect all the usual driving aids were included and this car even had the heads-up display showing your speed, the road speed and directions when the navigation is selected.
A couple of things where weren’t so sure about, the boot looked small than the previous version and when the tailgate’s up it’s the right height for a 6-footer to catch his head on the corner. We are not so sure about the rear seats either, in the old discovery you had a nice vantage point, now it’s more like a racing car position.
This vehicle was a standard car with road tyres, the one thing we did learn is that they call grass ‘green ice’. When wet, grass can be like sheet ice and it doesn’t matter what vehicle you’re in its easy to slide around and end up in a ditch!
Off road the vehicle was impeccable and didn’t put a wheel wrong. Steep downhill descents, not a problem. Press the hill descent button, take your feet off the pedals and let the car do the rest. All you have to do is steer.
Over large holes with the front and rear wheels 3 foot in the air, not a problem. With the air suspension, the Discovery happy made its way over the bumps. The one thing I was expecting and there was none of it was sudden steering wheel spin when you hit a bump in the road. The car seemed to know what was coming and made light work of every situation.
At this point we had the Discovery at 25Deg tilt. Apparently they can go further!
With all the technology in this vehicle, it even made me look good off road!!
We asked our instructor out of the cars in the Land Rover stable which would he choose and he said it depends on which day of the week it is as they are all capable on and off road.
